Hello everyone and welcome to my first Alaska update!!!Â
I’ve been fishing in Prince William Sound for three weeks now and it has been quite the ride. We have had a change of crew three times now, take a speed boat to the hospital, seen whales and bears, and caught some fish. Lots and lots of fish.
We splashed in on May 31st and set sail on June 4th. We jumped right into it as soon as we got to the designated fishing area. Our fishing endeavors did not last long however…

After a successful first day of fishing, we dropped anchor and tried to get some sleep before our early wake up call. (apparently fish don’t have a bedtime? they don’t sleep? This was news to me) We get started at 4am on day two, but after making only one set in the morning, one of the crew members told us something was wrong with her, she said her heart would not slow down and was beating too fast. Let me preface this story by saying she ended up being totally fine and is safe back home.Â
Things escalated quickly and she started to have intense chest pain. She has had panic attacks in the past but was saying this felt different. We had her lay down on the floor and try to calm down, she was breathing so fast that she passed out. Captain Zach called the coast guard but in our boat, we are currently 8 hours away from the nearest port town. The Coast Guard speed boat was dispatched, but it would take 2 hours for us to meet. It was a long 2 hours driving the boat hard while she was on the ground writhing as the chest pain came in waves, taking her breath away. Finally, the speedboat and us met up, a medical team came aboard to check her vitals. She was doing much better upon getting closer to the coast guard. I went with her on the speed boat back to the nearest port town of Valdez. She got checked into the hospital and was determined to be okay.Â
Captain Zach made his way over to Valdez later that night and we put into port. Although the situation was intense and unfortunate, the timing somehow worked out that we had a friend, named Sam, in Valdez that could work as a temp for two weeks while we found a replacement. On the drive back to the fishing area we saw a group of Humpback whales putting on a show.
We now had two weeks to find a new crew member, Zach was calling up connections he had but is seems like there was not much coming back. We continued to fish with Sam and played the waiting game. Eventually I told the Captain that I know someone who might be interested…
If you have read up on any of the Europe travel stories, you may recognize my friend LUKE!!! I called him up and asked if he was interested. It would be a quick turn around, we needed him in Alaska within 7 days.Â
After talking with the Captan and making some arrangements back home, Luke was on the boat with us back to the fishing area.Â
We are now back to a full crew and have been fishing together for two and a half weeks. During that time we have seen lots of wildlife, including but not limited to: Orcas, Bears, Sucker Blob Fish, Bald Eagles, Starfish, and Salmon.Â
I’ll let you guess which is which…
Luke took over my job on deck and now I am driving the smaller skiff boat. Basically I pull the other end of the net with my boat. Eventually I’ll make a post going into detail what a day in the life looks like.Â
Hopefully we will be moving to the next fishing area soon, Valdez. It’s a small port town in the north-east section of Prince William Sound. This is where we will get a good chunk of our volume for the season. Since we will be next to town should have some more free time and service.Â
